Book Summary

The Prince and the Pauper is a novel by American author Mark Twain. It was first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. The novel represents Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII. Tom Canty, youngest son of a poor family living in Offal Court, London, has always aspired to a better life, encouraged by the local priest (who has taught him to read and write). Loitering around the palace gates one day, he sees a prince (the Prince of Wales – Edward VI). Coming too close in his intense excitement, Tom is nearly caught and beaten by the Royal Guards; however, Edward stops them and invites Tom into his palace chamber. There the two boys get to know one another, fascinated by each other's life and their uncanny resemblance; they were born on the same day. They decide to switch clothes "temporarily". The Prince momentarily goes outside, quickly hiding an article of national importance (which the reader later learns is the Great Seal of England), but dressed as he is in Tom's rags, he is not recognized by the guards, who drive him from the palace, and he eventually finds his way through the streets to the Canty home. There he is subjected to the brutality of Tom's abusive father, from whom he manages to escape, and meets one Miles Hendon, a soldier and nobleman returning from war. Although Miles does not believe Edward's claims to royalty, he humors him and becomes his protector. Meanwhile, news reaches them that King Henry VIII has died and Edward is now the king. Tom, posing as the prince, tries to cope with court customs and manners. His fellow nobles and palace staff think "the prince" has an illness which has caused memory loss and fear he will go mad.

Book Summary

"What am I writing? A historical tale of 300 years ago, simply for the love of it." Mark Twain's "tale" became his first historical novel, The Prince and the Pauper, published in 1881. Intricately plotted, it was intended to have the feel of history even though it was only the stuff of legend. In sixteenth-century England, young Prince Edward (son of Henry VIII) and Tom Canty, a pauper boy who looks exactly like him, are suddenly forced to change places. The prince endures "rags & hardships" while the pauper suffers the "horrible miseries of princedom." Mark Twain called his book a "tale for young people of all ages," and it has become a classic of American literature. The first edition in 1881 was fully illustrated by Frank Merrill, John Harley, and L. S. Ipsen. The boys in these illustrations, Mark Twain said, "look and dress exactly as I used to see them cast in my mind. . . . It is a vast pleasure to see them cast in the flesh, so to speak." This Mark Twain Library edition exactly reproduces the text of the California scholarly edition, including all of the 192 illustrations that so pleased the author.

You are a Prince, not a pauper. And before too long the whole of England will be in your hands... Jemma Kennedy's stage adaptation of The Prince and the Pauper is a dynamic and fast-paced adaptation of Mark Twain's 1881 classic novel of confused identities. The Prince and the Pauper tells the story of what happens when one person is mistaken for the other and what happens to them in the long-term: Tom Canty is forced into the world of the court and power, while Edward is cast down into a world of poverty and thieves, from which he must fight his way back to the court. First produced at the Unicorn Theatre, the UK's leading theatre for young audiences aged 2 ? 21 from the 25th November 2012 to the 13 January 2013.

Book Summary

New York Times Bestseller! A School Library Journal Best Book of the Year A never-before-published, previously unfinished Mark Twain children’s story is brought to life by Philip and Erin Stead, creators of the Caldecott Medal-winning A Sick Day for Amos McGee. In a hotel in Paris one evening in 1879, Mark Twain sat with his young daughters, who begged their father for a story. Twain began telling them the tale of Johnny, a poor boy in possession of some magical seeds. Later, Twain would jot down some rough notes about the story, but the tale was left unfinished . . . until now. Plucked from the Mark Twain archive at the University of California at Berkeley, Twain’s notes now form the foundation of a fairy tale picked up over a century later. With only Twain’s fragmentary script and a story that stops partway as his guide, author Philip Stead has written a tale that imagines what might have been if Twain had fully realized this work. Johnny, forlorn and alone except for his pet chicken, meets a kind woman who gives him seeds that change his fortune, allowing him to speak with animals and sending him on a quest to rescue a stolen prince. In the face of a bullying tyrant king, Johnny and his animal friends come to understand that generosity, empathy, and quiet courage are gifts more precious in this world than power and gold. Illuminated by Erin Stead’s graceful, humorous, and achingly poignant artwork, this is a story that reaches through time and brings us a new book from America’s most legendary writer, envisioned by two of today’s most important names in children’s literature. With the weather turning colder, this is one chilling book you would be better off without.

Book Summary

- Includes the 192 illustrations by F. T. Merrill -Table of contents to every chapters in the book. -Complete and formatted to improve your reading experience Tom Canty (youngest son of a family living with the dregs of society in Offal Court) has always aspired to a better life, encouraged by the local priest (who has taught him to read and write). Loitering around the palace gates one day, he sees a prince (the Prince of Wales – Edward VI). Tom is nearly caught and beaten by the Royal Guards; however, Edward stops them and invites Tom into his palace chamber. There the two boys get to know one another, fascinated by each other's life and their uncanny resemblance. They decide to switch clothes "temporarily". Edward leaves in a hurry before the boys are caught at their game, snatching up an article of national importance (which the reader later learns is the Great Seal of England). Soon Prince Edward is trying to escape the brutality of Tom's abusive drunken father. Tom, posing as the prince, tries to cope with court customs and manners. His fellow nobles and palace staff think "the prince" has an illness which has caused memory loss and fear he will go mad. They repeatedly ask him about the missing "Great Seal", but he knows nothing about it; however, when Tom is asked to sit in on judgments, his common-sense observations reassure them his mind is sound. Edward soon meets Miles Hendon, a soldier and nobleman returning from war. Although Miles does not believe Edward's claims to royalty, he humors him and becomes his protector. Meanwhile, news reaches them that King Henry VIII has died and Edward is now the king. As Edward experiences the brutish life of a pauper firsthand, he becomes aware of the stark class inequality in England. In particular, he sees the harsh, punitive nature of the English judicial system where people are burned at the stake, pilloried, and flogged. He realizes that the accused are convicted on flimsy evidence (and branded – or hanged – for petty offenses), and vows to reign with mercy when he regains his rightful place. When Edward unwisely declares to a gang of thieves that he is the king and will put an end to unjust laws, they assume he is insane and hold a mock coronation. After a series of adventures (including a stint in prison), Edward interrupts the coronation as Tom is about to celebrate it as King Edward VI. Tom is eager to give up the throne; however, the nobles refuse to believe that the beggarly child Edward appears to be is the rightful king until he produces the Great Seal that he hid before leaving the palace. Tom declares that if anyone had bothered to describe the seal he could have produced it at once, since he had found it inside a decorative suit of armor (where Edward had hidden it) and had been using it to crack nuts. Edward and Tom switch back to their original places and Miles is rewarded with the rank of earl and the family right to sit in the presence of the king. In gratitude for supporting the new king's claim to the throne, Edward names Tom the "king's ward" (a privileged position he holds for the rest of his life). They live happily for sometime. But it is noted that whereas Tom lived a long life, Edward died young.

Book Summary

Book Summary

This carefully crafted ebook: “The Prince and the Pauper + A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court + Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc” contains 3 books in one volume and is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Prince and the Pauper is a novel by Mark Twain first published in 1881 in Canada, before its 1882 publication in the United States. Set in 1547, it tells the story of two young boys who are identical in appearance: Tom Canty, a pauper who lives with his abusive father in Offal Court off Pudding Lane in London, and Prince Edward, son of King Henry VIII. A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is an 1889 novel by Mark Twain, originally published in book form in 1896. The novel is a satirical comedy that looks at 6th-Century England and its medieval culture through the eyes of Hank Morgan, a 19th-century resident of Hartford, Connecticut, who, after a blow to the head, awakens to find himself inexplicably transported back in time to early medieval England at the time of the legendary King Arthur. Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, published in 1896, is the remarkable story of the saint's life as told by the fictional Sieur Louis de Conté, Joan's page and secretary, in the form of a memoir written in the twilight of life. The character has had the privilege of growing up with Joan of Arc, accompanying her during the excitement and pageantry of her military campaigns, and being present at each of her three trials. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835 – 1910), better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "the Great American Novel."

Book Summary

A fine evening - six centuries ago - shed a bright parting light over Alton Wood, illuminating the gray lichens that clung to the rugged trunks of the old oak trees, and shining on the smoother bark of the graceful beech, with that sidelong light that, towards evening, gives an especial charm to woodland scenery. The long shadows lay across an open green glade, narrowing towards one end, where a path, nearly lost amid dwarf furze, crested heather, and soft bent-grass, led towards a hut, rudely constructed of sods of turf and branches of trees, whose gray crackling foliage contrasted with the fresh verdure around. There was no endeavour at a window, nor chimney; but the door of wattled boughs was carefully secured by a long twisted withe...

Book Summary

Book Summary

Could you be Captain of a whaling ship if all the crew around you died in a tragedy? Would you even want to? And what would you do if the cook on board has plans of his own and wants to kill you? This and much more is what poor fifteen year old Dick Sands has to deal with as the only surviving crew member. Everything seems to be going according to plan. That is until the cook sabotages the ship and rather than arriving in South America, the group ends up in Africa. The evil cook’s plan is to sell everyone on board into slavery. Will they survive all the obstacles and unexpected occurrences or will they fall victims to the African slave trade? 'Dick Sands, the Boy Captain' is an adventure novel which not only keeps you on the edge until the very end, but it also depicts the widespread condemnation of slavery. Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist who mostly wrote adventure fiction inspired by the scientific advances of the 19th century. With the help of editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel he wrote a series of books called 'Extraordinary Travels', which includes 'Journey to the Center of the Earth' (1864), 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea' (1870) and 'Around the World in Eighty Days' (1873). There have been many film adaptations of Jules Verne’s books with the most notable being 'Journey to the Center of The Earth' (2008) starring Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), 'Around the World in 80 Days' (1956) and 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' (2012) starring Dwayne Johnson. Widely popular with both children and adults, Verne is one of the most translated authors of all time, and still inspires people the world over.

Book Summary

These four timeless classics of American fiction explore the trials of growing up and the hypocrisies of nineteenth-century American life. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: Escaping society, Huckleberry Finn and a runaway slave named Jim take a log raft down the Mississippi River. Their adventures draw them closer together until Huck must make a fateful choice between Jim’s freedom and his own salvation. One of the first major novels written in an American vernacular, Mark Twain’s masterpiece is an essential part of the United States’ national identity. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer: This tale of youth and friendship celebrates life on the Mississippi River with humor and thoughtful consideration of issues such as race, religion, and social taboos. Filled with schoolyard pranks, buried treasure, spooky caves, secret gangs, and grave robbers, this highly entertaining novel boasts a cast of immortal characters, including Huckleberry Finn, Becky Thatcher, Aunt Polly, and the Widow Douglas. The Prince and the Pauper:Set in sixteenth-century England, this historical fable tells the story of a prince and a peasant boy who meet by chance and discover their strikingly similar appearances. The two then craft a plot that could unwittingly upend the monarchy: to temporarily switch clothes, thereby swapping lives. Pudd’nhead Wilson:An enslaved woman switches her infant son with her master’s child. A New York lawyer moves to the South and is immediately and forever branded a “pudd’nhead.” Two Italian noblemen in Missouri become suspects in the murder of a local judge. From these disparate plot strands, Twain fashions a humorous tale of mystery—and a clear-eyed indictment of slavery.
