Repertory Philippines Holds Open Auditions for EQUUS 0

Repertory Philippines (Rep), the country’s premier professional theatre company, holds open auditions for their new production of Peter Shaffer’s psychodrama EQUUS on Monday, March 8, 2010, 5-9 p.m. (for major and minor roles) and on Friday, March 12, 2010, 6-9 p.m. (for the role of Alan Strang) at the Rep office, C2-A, Building C, 2316, Karrivin Plaza, Pasong Tamo Extension, Makati City.
In EQUUS, Dr. Martin Dysart attempts to treat Alan Strang, a teenage boy who has blinded six horses in a violent fit of passion. Dysart believes that Strang has a case of pathological religious and sexual fascination with horses, which leads the psychiatrist and his patient to a complex and disturbingly dramatic confrontation.
Richard Griffiths played Dysart and Daniel Radcliffe played Strang in both London and Broadway revivals in 2007-2008.
Rep’s production of EQUUS is in search of actors for the following roles:
ALAN STRANG: Age 18 to 27 (can pass for 17). Height 5’5″ to 5’9″. He must be proficient in the English language. Acting and theater experience a plus.
DORA STRANG, Alan’s mother: Age 40 to 50.
Frank Strang, Alan’s father: Age 40 to 50.
HESTHER SALOMON, a magistrate: Age 30 to 50.
HARRY DALTON, stable owner: Age 40 to 60.
JILL MASON, Alan’s love interest: Age 20 to 23.
HORSEMAN: Height 5’10″ and above. Lean built. Must be able to follow choreography.
HORSES: Height 5’10″ and above. Lean built. Must be able to follow choreography.

Auditionees are requested to pick up the reading material for the roles they are auditioning for at the Rep office.

Last Weekend for ROMEO & BERNADETTE 0

Repertory Philippines’ critically acclaimed production of Mark Saltzman’s comedy musical ROMEO & BERNADETTE will have its last performances at the OnStage Theatre, Greenbelt 1, Makati City on February 26 to 28, 2010.

“In a season of must-sees such as ‘Rent’ and ‘Cats,’ Repertory Philippines’ ‘Romeo & Bernadette’ is up there with the best of them,” according to The Manila Times.

Repertory Philippines opens 2010 Season 0

Repertory’s new Season starts off with the Philippine premiere of Peter Quilter’s new romantic comedy, DUETS.  Scheduled for mid-January to the end of the month, DUETS is four different vignettes with four sets of characters.  Set in glorious comedy, the play explores the hilarious nuances of love in seemingly impossible, but extremely funny situations.   Joy Virata and Miguel Faustmann take on all four sets of characters, providing rollicking entertainment as they go through costume and character changes onstage.  DUETS is directed by Ana Abad Santos. Playdates are January 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 and 30 at 8 p.m. with 3:30 p.m. matinees on January 16, 17, 23, 24, 30 and 31.

Repertory Philippines’ SWEENEY TODD opens November 14 0

Repertory Philippines opens its new production of the celebrated, Tony Award-winning musical thriller SWEENEY TODD on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at Onstage, Greenbelt 1.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Hugh Wheeler, this production boasts a formidable cast. Led by theatre stalwart Audie Gemora in the title role, the musical includes major role players Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo (Mrs. Lovett), Robbie Guevara (Beadle), Robbie Zialcita (Pirelli), Roger Chua (Judge Turpin), and Repertory Philippines newcomers Marvin Ong (Tobias), Lena McKenzie (Johanna), and Franco Laurel (Anthony).

One has often wondered what it is about Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” that has always been the ultimate enigma for the theatre artist who is passionate about his craft.

To begin with, the story about a “demon barber” is not exactly what one would want to tell little children for their bedtime story.  After all, if you think about it, the theme is rather grizzly.  But one had to admit that there is this nagging fascination for all that is horrible and frightening – provided you are not part of it.  So when you sit in a darkened theatre and watch the events as they unravel, you take pleasure in some delicious, tingly sensation.

Audie Gemora, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Robbie Guevarra, Lena McKenzie, and Franco Laurel comprise the lead cast of Repertory Philippines’ (REP) new stage production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.”  The musical runs at Onstage 2/F Greenbelt 1, Ayala Center, Makati City from November 13 to December 13, 2009.
