First-look image from Dreamworks’ “Real Steel” 0

Posted on June 18, 2010 by kankan
In this first-look photo from DreamWorks Pictures’ “Real Steel,” which began shooting live-action scenes recently, Hugh Jackman isn’t throwing the punches — the guy to the left is.
The movie, directed by Shawn Levy (“Date Night”), imagines a world in which human boxing is non-existent, replaced by leagues of mechanized pugilists. It’s expected to arrive in theaters in November 2011.
“The moment of walking in and seeing these robots, my jaw was on the floor,” Jackman said. That’s because the robot in this image is a real device, not a digital visual effect.
Motion-capture animation is used in the film when the machines are brawling (with boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard working as an adviser on those), but 19 real-life animatronic giants were created for scenes with the human actors.
Levy says that blend was encouraged by Steven Spielberg, an executive producer. (This is a DreamWorks film being released by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures.)
“There are some things only visual effects can pull off,” Levy says. “But when you give an actor a real thing, in this case a real 8-foot-tall machine, to interact with and do dialogue opposite, you get a more grounded reality to the performance.”
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, “Real Steel” stars Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.
“Real Steel” is a DreamWorks Picture to be distributed locally by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.

Disney launches “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” character posters 0

Posted on June 17, 2010 by kankan
Walt Disney Pictures has just released the character posters of its new, fantasy adventure “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” an innovative and epic adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil.
The new individual posters feature the film’s five leading characters, namely The Sorcerer, The Apprentice, The Wizard, The Villain and The Sorceress.  Below are their character descriptions:
THE SORCERER aka Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) is a student of Merlin.  More than 1,000 years old, Balthazar has been searching the globe until he finds the Prime Merlinean, the descendent of Merlin and inheritor of his great powers.  When Balthazar finally discovers him in 10-year-old Dave Stutler, he finds himself with a very reluctant sorcerer’s apprentice.
THE APPRENTICE aka Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) is a nerdy NYU physics major, lacking confidence and poise, not very popular with girls or even his fellow students.  At the age of 10, he experiences a frightening incident when he encounters sorcerer Balthazar Blake after wandering into the bizarre Arcana Cabana curio shop. He’s given a dragon ring that comes to life on his finger, and he’s told that he’ll be a very important sorcerer himself.  He then witnesses a furious battle between Balthazar and another sorcerer named Maxim Horvath which made him want to forget the whole matter…until both Balthazar and Horvath re-enter his life 10 years later, forcing him to confront a destiny he would very much like to ignore!
THE SORCERESS aka Veronica (Monica Bellucci) has had the great fortune of being loved by Balthazar Blake—and the misfortune of being loved by Maxim Horvath.
THE VILLAIN aka Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) was, along with Balthazar Blake and Veronica, a disciple of Merlin and a force of good more than a thousand years ago.  But their mutual love for Veronica split the colleagues apart.  He and Balthazar have battled through the ages, finally bringing their conflict to modern-day New York City.
THE WIZARD aka Drake Stone (Toby Kebbell) is a long, lean, punked-out illusionist who is actually a dark sorcerer assisting Maxim Horvath in his battle against Balthazar Blake and Dave Stutler.  He’s a stage performer with an ego to match his popularity, but with no fan bigger than himself.
Opening soon across the Philippines, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.

President-Elect of the Philippines Benigno ‘Noynoy” Aquino on CNN’s Talk Asia 0

Posted on June 16, 2010 by kankan

noy_talkasiaPhoto by: Jay Morales and CNN Talk Asia

This week’s Talk Asia gets a unique insight into Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino and his family’s political legacy. CNN’s Arwa Damon travels to Tarlac to meet the Philippines’ President-elect at his family’s estate.
24 years after his mother became President, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino is set to be sworn in to office on June 30, almost a month after the country’s general election.  Winning the presidential election by a landslide, Aquino has promised his people change: “It seems that for such a long time you’ve been told to persevere and forbear, and to just tolerate the system when you don’t have to. Let us be your instruments in affecting these changes… We are the public servants, you are the public, you are the masters, you are the ones who have the decisions, wants and needs that should be respected and delivered, and we will bring it back to that point.”
The President-elect also vows to improve the livelihood of his countrymen by leveling the playing field: “You want to give everybody the opportunity to really advance their status in life.  You want
to give them the opportunities to improve their luck, and that is basically getting back government ability, to affect all of these – transforming these potentials into actualities.”
Nicknamed “Noynoy”, Aquino’s father Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. was assassinated in 1983 when he returned from exile to lead opposition to then President, Ferdinand Marcos. His mother, Corazon Aquino, later took over the leadership of her husband’s movement and became the country’s first female President in 1986.
After more than two decades, Aquino still has vivid memories of the moment he heard of his father’s assassination: “I was in Boston…I was watching CNN and I don’t remember the name of the announcer right now, but he pronounced my father’s name incorrectly. Of course there was no videos or anything at that point, and he just said ‘opposition leader Benigno Aquino’…it was really an experience…you couldn’t be defined in either time or space at that point in time. I guess that’s what shock is.”
Yet the 50-year-old claims that he holds no grudges against the Marcos family, even if the former President’s children are now running for power. “I think I’m in the same boat as they are. We are all victims of the rule of their parents, and the only difference is that I recognize it and they don’t. So long as what they do aspire for is for the betterment of the people, I can support them. But if they ever decide to go back to that tragedy of the martial law, then they can count on being opposed from the first second that they embark on that route.”
Aquino also shares with Damon what drove him to run for President: “It was a choice of being comfortable personally as opposed to performing one’s duty, and then the end question was if things become worse, can I face myself in the mirror and say I could have done something but I chose not to and say I’m okay with that? I don’t think I could.” The Philippines President-elect also takes Damon on a rare, guided tour of the Aquino Center – which houses memorabilia of the Aquino family including a replica of the prison cell his father was locked in for more than seven years.
Aquino’s interview can be watched online after its first airing at www.cnn.com/talkasia.
