“Marmaduke” unleashed 0

Posted on April 29, 2010 by kankan
In the tradition of its family-oriented live-CGI blockbuster “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and “Garfield” movies, 20th Century Fox unleashes “Marmaduke,” a 1954 comic strip on the world’s most gregarious Great Dane starring Academy Award nominee William H. Macy, Judy Greer and Lee Pace with a voice cast that includes Owen Wilson, Kiefer Sutherland, Amanda Seyfried, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Black Eyed Peas’ Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson.
Tom Dey, who gave us the hilarious “Shanghai Noon” and romantic comedy “Failure to Launch” once again lends his comedic paw prints in “Marmaduke” where the story embarks on the wacky misadventures of the Winslow family with their beloved Great Dane Marmaduke (voiced by Owen Wilson).
In the movie Phil (Lee Pace) and Debbie (Judy Greer) Winslow queasily move in to a new neighborhood, their hyper-driven canine Marmaduke sees the move as a whole new leash for more exploration.   As Marmaduke explores his vast new surrounding, he finds himself in the middle of an ongoing battle of fitting in and wooing his newfound purebred love.
“We’ve approached the movie like a John Hughes movie with dogs,” Dey says in an interview from USA Today. “The dog park is like high school for dogs. To make this kind of movie, you really have to understand that it is the dog’s world and we just live in it.” The story in Marmaduke will be told from the viewpoint of the dog – like Scooby Doo, but hopefully not as bad. “Marmaduke is a teenager, and he’s trying to find his way in the world,” Dey further explains. “It’s a boy-meets-girl story, a coming-of-age and cautionary tale.”
Whacks of family fun unleashes when “Marmaduke”opens June 4 in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

Russell Crowe as “Robin Hood” 0

Posted on April 28, 2010 by kankan
Academy Award® winner RUSSELL CROWE reunites with his blockbuster Gladiator director, filmmaking legend RIDLEY SCOTT, for the epic action-adventure Robin Hood.  Joining with Oscar®-winning producer BRIAN GRAZER (A Beautiful Mind, American Gangster) and Oscar®-winning screenwriter BRIAN HELGELAND (L.A. Confidential, Green Zone), they tell the story of the legendary figure known by generations as “Robin Hood,” whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness.
In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and challenge the crown to alter the balance of power between the king and all of his subjects.  And whether outlaw or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.
Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard I’s army against the French.  Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscar® winner Cate Blanchett of The Aviator, Elizabeth), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest.  Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life.
With their country weakened from decades of war, embattled from the ineffective rule of the new king and vulnerable to insurgencies from within and threats from afar, Robin and his men heed a call to ever greater adventure.  This unlikeliest of heroes and his allies set off to protect their country from slipping into bloody civil war and return glory to England once more.
Crowe and Blanchett lead a cast of accomplished performers, including Academy Award® winner WILLIAM HURT (The Good Shepherd, A History of Violence) as Sir William Marshal, MARK STRONG (Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass) as Sir Godfrey, MARK ADDY (The Full Monty, A Knight’s Tale) as Friar Tuck, OSCAR ISAAC (Body of Lies, Che) as Prince John and DANNY HUSTON (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Children of Men) as King Richard The Lionheart, as well as legendary performers DAME EILEEN ATKINS (Last Chance Harvey, Cold Mountain) as Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine and MAX VON SYDOW (Shutter Island, The Exorcist) as Sir Walter Loxley.
They are joined by rising stars MATTHEW MACFADYEN (Frost/Nixon, Pride & Prejudice) as the Sheriff of Nottingham and SCOTT GRIMES (Crimson Tide, Mystery, Alaska), KEVIN DURAND (Legion, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and newcomer ALAN DOYLE as Robin’s Merry Men—Will Scarlet, Little John and Allan A’Dayle, respectively.
Filmed on location in England and Wales, Robin Hood spans the years from the death of King Richard I in 1199 to the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215.  It is produced by Scott, Grazer and Crowe, from a story by Helgeland and ETHAN REIFF & CYRUS VORIS (television’s Sleeper Cell) and a screenplay by Helgeland.
The celebrated behind-the-scenes team is led by a crew of longtime Ridley Scott collaborators, including cinematographer JOHN MATHIESON (Gladiator, The Phantom of the Opera), BAFTA-winning production designer ARTHUR MAX (Body of Lies, Gladiator), Oscar®-winning costume designer JANTY YATES (Body of Lies, Gladiator), two-time Oscar®-winning editor PIETRO SCALIA (Body of Lies, JFK) and composer MARC STREITENFELD (American Gangster, Body of Lies).
CHARLES J.D. SCHLISSEL (Body of Lies, Matchstick Men), MICHAEL COSTIGAN (Body of Lies, American Gangster), JIM WHITAKER (Changeling, American Gangster) and RYAN KAVANAUGH (The Hangover, The Wolfman) serve as the film’s executive producers.
ROBIN HOOD is released and distributed by United International Pictures thru Solar Entertainment Corp. In Cinemas 14 May 2010 (Friday)

Aljur Abrenica reaffirms romance with music 0

Posted on April 28, 2010 by kankan
Aljur Abrenica’s acting career suddenly grew by leaps and bounds in 2009 that few remember music was one of his tickets in achieving success in show business.
In joining “StarStruck” 2006, the “Ultimate Hunk” scaled his way to the top of the tilt by singing exceptionally well both his solo numbers and those with other finalists. On Sunday variety show “SOP,” GMA-7’s Prince of Primetime took on songs of different musical genres weekly which helped sharpen his vocal chops.
Fortunately, Sony Music and GMA Records have not forgotten this side of Aljur. The two giant labels produced “Aljur” that’s composed of original songs and remakes namely “Iisa Sa Magkabilang Mundo,” “Di Na Ako Aasa Pa,” “Kailan Kaya,” “Beauty And Madness” and the Latin-flavored carrier single “Sayang Sayang,” music video of which was shot entirely at the luxury Thunderbird Resorts in Rizal.
While Aljur is not likely to become a singing champion, his voice is considered radio-friendly and easy to sing along with. This is largely the reason half of “Aljur” are minus-one versions of his songs. This way, listeners can enjoy Aljur Abrenica music in more ways than one.
The people who collaborated on Aljur’s album are both fresh and established names. These are Jude Gitamondoc, Panji, Alwyn Cruz, Melvin Morallos, Nino Regalado, Jonathan Ong and Michael V. More, the songs that ended up on the eponymous debut were carefully selected by two Artist & Repertoire managers to ensure that Aljur only gets the best materials.
Prior to the release of his album, Aljur has been making his prescence felt in the concert circuit. He was the special guest in La Diva’s first major concert at the Music Museum last December and reviews of the show were unanimous in saying that Aljur could very well hold his own to the female trio’s singing mettle.
Recently, Aljur held his first solo concert “I’m Yours” at Zirkoh Tomas Morato.
Asked why he is seemingly conquering all fronts in show business, Aljur, in a recent interview during the press conference done at Toyz Bar in Ortigas, gave a sincere answer.
“I want to use all the talents that God gave me,” he quipped.
“Aljur” is released under Sony Music and GMA Records.

Gemma Arterton, from “Clash of the Titans” to “Prince of Persia” 0

Posted on April 28, 2010 by kankan
Rising star Gemma Arterton is the first to admit she has come a long way in such a short space of time. Before appearing in the recent box-office smash “Clash of the Titans” opposite Sam Worthington, she played a Bond girl in the latest 007 movie “Quantum of Solace.”  Now, she stars in Walt Disney Pictures’ “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” where she plays Tamina, a high priestess who teams up with Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal) to save the mystical Dagger of Time which has the ability to turn back the clock.  But with plenty of interested parties desperate to get their hands on it, the pair must battle against the odds to work out exactly who they can trust during this quest full of twists, turns and epic adventure.
In the following interview, Arteron talks about the film inspired by the best-selling video game series, and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and the team behind the blockbuster franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean .”
Q: How does Tamina differ to your past roles?
Gemma Arterton: My past roles didn’t really have any action. In this I have a lot of action. But Tamina is a High Priestess, so she is not your typical gun-wielding character. She’s very spiritual so it’s an interesting take to have someone’s action set against her religious beliefs.
Q: Tell us about the relationship between your character and Jake’s?
Arterton: Tamina is the Princess of Alamut, a city that the Persians invade and I’m kind of kidnapped.  She’s very spiritual so she just dislikes them. Jake’s character and mine have this real love/hate relationship. Obviously they fancy each other but they don’t show it. They join forces and find out more information about the bad things that are happening in Persia and so they learn from each other. The film is a journey for them both. She is his right-hand girl. It’s not just an action/adventure, it’s not just a romance, it’s not just this or that, there is lots of drama and it takes you in different directions all the time.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about filming “Prince of Persia ”?
Arterton: I love all the action stuff. I think I should have really been a stunt woman. I really enjoy it even if sometimes you think, ‘Oh my god, there are people that are trained to do this and to get battered and bruised’. But I’ve loved doing the fighting. There isn’t a particular style to mine because it’s quite wild. She’s never been trained to fight. It’s just me going ‘Aaarrrggghhh’. Where I went to drama school, I trained in stage combat quite heavily so I had a bit of experience before. It is gobsmacking seeing the sets and the costumes and the sheer scale of this film. You are put into this completely different world and that is really, really fantastic because you don’t have to imagine much because it is there right in front of you.
Q: Were there any particular skills you needed to learn for this film?
Arterton: I had to learn how to horse ride as I’d never done it before in my life and it’s kind of become a real new passion for me. Pretty much the whole cast went to Spain and learned to ride for two weeks, which was an incredible opportunity to have.
Q: Has it been inspiring or intimidating to work with so many experienced actors such as Sir Ben Kingsley and Jake Gyllenhaal?
Arterton: It is absolutely inspiring. I tend to go into things head first and not really think about what I am doing, which is sometimes better than going, ‘Oh my god, I’m just about to act with Sir Ben Kingsley!’ Then you are yourself and that’s what they want ultimately anyway. You’re just another actor working with them on a film. It’s brilliant but I don’t think I get too worried about it. I probably should, when I’m being all cheeky and scampy with Sir Ben Kingsley, but no, it’s brilliant and an honor.
Q: Your career has moved very fast in such a short time – how have you found that?
Arterton: Since the Bond film came out, everything has happened very quickly, I’m really starting to feel it. Usually I can get on with my work and not think about it but it’s actually had an effect on my life now. Hey, why not? If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen. It is mad what has happened in a year. In a year I think I’ve done eight films. I don’t know how I’ve done it.
(Opening soon across the Philippines , “Prince of Persia : The Sands of Time” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.)

Miley Cyrus grows up with “The Last Song” 0

Posted on April 27, 2010 by kankan
Teen sensation Miley Cyrus is thrilled to tackle her first dramatic role in a film written by Nicholas Sparks, with Touchstone Pictures’ “The Last Song.” She says that “A Walk to Remember” and “The Notebook” had a huge impact on her life. “His work has great, positive messages,” notes the young actress. “To me, the best thing is that kids love it, but it’s also mature enough to appeal to adults. It’s unusual to find that kind of balance.”
“The Last Song” is set in a small Southern beach town where an estranged father (Greg Kinnear) gets a chance to spend the summer with his reluctant teenage daughter, Ronnie (Cyrus), who’d rather be home in New York. He tries to reconnect with her through the only thing they have in common—music—in a story of family, friendship, secrets and salvation, along with first loves and second chances.
Cyrus says the predicament her character faces in the film rang true for her. “When her parents separated, she made some bad choices. But she starts to find her way to being a happier person through faith and love and friendship. Those are the most important ingredients to happiness and they are things in life that we sometimes overlook.
“I love music and I love entertaining,” adds the teen star. “It makes me so sad to think of not doing this. So it makes me sad that someone with the talent that Ronnie has would deliberately cut herself off from it. Living without music in my life would be like having no air to breathe, and for Ronnie, it’s much the same thing. She gives it up to prove a point to her dad and, really, she’s just cheating herself.”
Director Julie Anne Robinson was not familiar with her leading lady’s previous work when she signed on to direct “The Last Song,” but she was quickly won over by Cyrus’ natural talent and charisma. “She has this amazing star quality,” says the director. “She just glows, and when she walks on the set, everybody knows it. Sometimes I cannot believe she’s 16 years old. She’s got a tremendous range.”
The role required Cyrus to expand her musical horizons by learning piano, which she says she picked up quickly. “Maybe it was easier because I already play guitar,” says Cyrus, who plans to continue her piano studies. “I learned not just how to play a song but how to play it like a classically trained musician, the way to sit, the way you look when you’re at the piano, the posture, the fingering. It’s a lot more discipline than just casual playing. The learning experiences are a part of my job I really love. So many people dream of learning something like this and I’m getting this experience along with making a movie.”
The actress hopes this will be the first in a series of roles that allow her to stretch and grow. “I think it’s really important to look for roles that are challenging,” says Cyrus. “This came up at a crazy time. I had a tour, I was working on the show; I thought it might be impossible to fit this in, but it all fell into place. It was perfect, because that’s what this movie’s about—things coming together so beautifully against all odds.”
Opening soon across the Philippines, “The Last Song” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.

Warner Bros. reaches the P500-M mark as “Titans” grosses P200-M 0

Posted on April 27, 2010 by kankan
MANILA, April 26 – “Clash of the Titans” solidified its blockbuster status in Philippine box-office as it reached the milestone P200-mark yesterday, April 25 after only three weeks, becoming the year’s most successful film to date. This was announced today by Francis Soliven, general manager of Warner Bros. (F.E.), Inc. which distributed the film.
“Clash” attained the milestone Sunday when it posted a cumulative gross of a staggering P201.58-million.  The film’s sensational run propelled Warner Bros.’ year-to-date earnings to reach a jolting P515.89-million, which is quite impressive since its only four months into 2010.
“This is the first time in local history that a film distributor conquered the P500-million mark in under four months,” says Soliven.
Aside from “Titans,” the studio’s other certified box-office successes were February’s teen fantasy “Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief” (which Warner distributed for Twentieth Century Fox) which grossed P94.24-million, January’s action-adventure “Sherlock Holmes” (P53.18-million) and the comedy “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” (P51.96-million), as well as the ensemble romantic comedy “Valentine’s Day” (P34-million), released last February.
The rest of the year looks even brighter for Warner as its potential juggernauts are still to open.  “As the saying goes, `The best is yet to come,’” says Soliven.  “As it stands, we hope to breach the P1-billion mark before the year’s fourth quarter because of our strong line-up.”
Still to come from Warner are the horror-thriller “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” the highly-awaited sequel “Sex and the City 2,” the comic book adaptation “Jonah Hex,” the mind-bending thriller “Inception” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the comedy adventure “Cats & Dogs 2,” the 3D adventure “Legends of the Guardians,” the comedy “Due Date” starring Robert Downey, Jr. and second-to-the-last installment of the enduring Harry Potter franchise, “The Deathly Hallows, Part 1.”
From Fox (which Warner sub-distributes), the upcoming potential hits are the film adaptation of the TV classic “The A-Team,” the Tom Cruise-starrer “Knight & Day,” the Robert Rodriguez-directed actioner “Predators,” Oliver Stone’s sequel “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” the action-thriller “Unstoppable” and the fantasy adventure “The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”
