“Avatar” starts at 57 million in (Phils.) box-office  0

James Cameron continues to be king of the world as “Avatar” gushed in a total of P 57.67 million on its first 4-day opening weekend in the Phils. With more than 370,000 admissions to-date, “Avatar” now holds the Biggest Opening Weekend record for a Fox Film that opened in 2009.

Woody Harrelson follows up the hugely successful “2012” with Columbia Pictures’ new horror action-comedy “Zombieland,” a recent No. 1 hit in the U.S.

Harrelson says that he was impressed by the “Zombieland” script.  “Tonally, it rides the line between comedy and the impending danger of the zombies.  It’s tricky – you have to keep up a level of reality, or it becomes farce, but that presents its own challenges.”  Plus, his character gets to kick zombie butt.  What more could a man ask for?

The winners of the 21st Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video were announced in awarding rites held on December 11, 2009 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Tanghalang Manuel Conde.

In the Experimental category, the 1st Prize went to ANG EBOLUSYON NI KASALANAN by Emerson Reyes, 2nd prize to ANG ROMANSA NI TINYENTE GIMO AND MARYA LABO by Joenar Pueblo and 3rd Prize to PONKAN by John Japhet Tubeo and Jonathan Marasigan. Honorable Mention was given to BIYAHILO By Revsson Antonio, Anthony Delima, Sheena Pearl Barandino, Jocel Bueno, Rochelle Relosa, Ronald Diata, Analyn Gamelo and Reggie Lapera.

“It’s definitely a broad comedy with a lot of funny set pieces,” says producer Andrew Panay, “but most importantly, it’s got a lot of heart.”

Magno (played by Manny Pacquiao) is an ordinary man whose world revolves around his five kids while his wife, Magda, works as a nurse in Italy.  One night Magno meets an accident.  A car crashes into his truck, and upon impact, a big explosion takes place.  Miraculously, Magno survives unscathed.  The blow-up was caused by Walo-walo, an organic substance which stores energy that is almost as powerful as a nuclear energy.  Soon, he wakes up and feels like a new man.  Lighter. Faster. Stronger.  Interestingly, his newfound powers start helping him become a better dad.  His wish of becoming faster, smarter, and stronger for his family is coming true.  He assumes the identity of their superhero – WAPAKMAN!

R. Kelly’s “Untitled” Is The No.1 R&B Album In The Country 0

New York, NY – This week, R. Kelly dominates the R&B albums chart with his tenth solo album, Untitled debuting at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. This marks the prolific singer/songwriter/producer’s fourth No. 1 R&B album debut, following R. Kelly (1995), R.(1998) and TP-2.COM (2000).
Untitled (Jive Records)  also debuted in the Top 5 on Billboard’s Top 200 Albums chart and has spawned three singles to date including the record-breaking “Number One” featuring Keri Hilson, “Religious” and “Echo”. Cumulatively, the songs have sold over 400K digital and mobile units.

Rachel McAdams travels in time with “Sherlock Holmes” 0

Fresh from the romance-fantasy hit “The Time Traveler’s Wife,” Rachel McAdams now literally goes to the past in Warner Bros.’ Victorian era-set action-adventure” Sherlock Holmes.”  McAdams portrays Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested Holmes and who has maintained a tempestuous relationship with the detective.

Directed by Guy Ritchie and produced by Joel Silver, “Sherlock Holmes” stars Robert Downey Jr. in the title role, Jude Law as Watson and Mark Strong as the villain Blackwood.
