The Motown sound went on to establish itself Worldwide in the 60’s and continues to be relevant today. With over 150 #1 singles and counting Motown’s hits continue to appear in commercials, TV and movies and remains an influence on today’s biggest pop and R&B stars. Motown stands for more than just the music, it’s a reflection of dedicated individuals overcoming huge obstacles to achieve success. Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown after an $800 loan from his family. Gordy went on to forge new ground for minorities and made the ‘Motown sound’.
A quick glance at this album’s tracklisting – there’s Diana Ross and The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, The Temptations, Four Tops, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye – and you realise just how important Motown as a label is, not just in the story of soul music but in music history itself. During its golden era, from 1961 to 1972, when it was situated at 2648 West Grand Boulevard, Detroit, the white painted suburban house that owner Berry Gordy had purchased to serve as the headquarters and studio for his fledgling label, Motown scored a mammoth 100 plus US Top 10 hits and 31 Number 1’s. No wonder it was nicknamed Hitsville USA.
The early Motown sound became immediately identifiable; an intoxicating excitable rush it got fingers clicking, hips twisting and feet dancing. Dubbed ‘The Sound Of Young America’, it seduced the UK’s teens too. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, The Who and Dusty Springfield were all indebted.
Motown had perfected the out on the floor dance single, but it wasn’t just about wooing a girl or saving a broken heart. On Motown 50, you can listen to the greatest songs of Hitsville USA, each track meticulously chosen by Rock N Roll legend – Ramon “RJ” Jacinto. You can enjoy more of Motown by tuning in to RJ100.3 every Sunday.
